Sit and Stitch is a title taken from “stitch and bitch” a title given to women who sit and
bitch during quilting bees. I specifically chose the craft of embroidery
because of the connection to the feminist art movement of the early 70’s and
fiber art. I’m interested in what is considered art, gallery exhibits verses
street art, graffiti, and yarn bombing. I’m interested in the making of an
object, a craft, an item that can be made by the hand and held in the hand. The
embroidery and stitching has relevance to the second wave feminist art of
handwork and current third wave feminism of craftivism.
