What is a "Sit and Stitch" ?
In 2010
I started hosting
gatherings and titled them Sit and Stitch,
directly taken from “Stitch n’ Bitch”, a phrase that has been used
to refer to social knitting groups since at least World War II. A Sit and Stitch is centered
on Feminist ideals of sharing, conversation, consciousness raising,
collaboration, and craft. Craftivism, a combination of activism
and crafts, became integral in this social practice art-making
project. The craft is stitching, “women’s work”. Participants converse about
women’s health issues, while threading needles and applying embroidered elements
to a pre-painted Uterus flag. It
is the shared time and memory making that becomes significant. The flags later unite
either exhibited inside or outside a gallery, as a collaboration work of art. I'm looking for spaces to exhibit this body of work, as well as participants to add their reflections through art.
